A day in the life of Daisy, the finance manager

You know how sometimes life takes you in unexpected directions? That's exactly what happened to me. I started out studying computer science and maths at university, but quickly realised that while I loved tech, coding wasn't my thing. During my year in industry, I took a chance and asked to do a finance internship instead of a computer science one. That taste of the finance world? It was like finding a piece of myself I didn't know was missing.

So, after graduation, I knew finance was where I wanted to be. I landed a job at EY in audit, which might sound a bit dry, but trust me, it was an incredible learning experience. I got to peek behind the curtain of all sorts of businesses, big and small. It gave me a rock-solid foundation in finance and showed me what "good" looks like from every angle.

Taking the leap

When the opportunity came up to join Sorted as a Finance Manager, I jumped at it. Why? Because it combined my love for technology with my passion for finance. Plus, the culture here? It's something special. We're a growing company, which means I get to wear many hats and really get my hands dirty. It's exactly what I was looking for – a chance to broaden my role and gain experience in different types of finance.

No two days are the same here at Sorted, and that's what keeps me on my toes. One day I'm running month-end accounts, the next I'm chatting with department heads about budgets. I love the variety – it keeps things exciting and challenges me to constantly improve our processes.

Growing together

One of the best parts of my job is helping my team grow. I encourage everyone to step up and try new things. It's all about open communication and giving people the chance to shape their own roles. After all, that's how I'd want to be managed.

Since joining Sorted, I've tackled some major projects. We migrated our entire financial system from Sage 50 to Xero – talk about a high-pressure situation! But you know what? We nailed it. It's these kinds of challenges that make me proud of what we're achieving here.

The Sorted difference

What sets Sorted apart? It's the freedom to experiment, to put your own stamp on things. Our CFO is always pushing us to leverage the latest technologies and make everything as efficient as possible. It's an environment where you're encouraged to take risks and try new approaches.

If you're thinking about a career in finance, especially at a dynamic company like Sorted, here's my advice: be ready to dive in headfirst. Attention to detail is crucial – after all, every number tells a story. And don't be afraid to put your own spin on things. As long as we get to the right answer, how you get there is up to you!

Why I love coming to work

The culture here at Sorted is something special. It's welcoming, it's flat-structured, and everyone – right up to the executive team – is approachable. We work hard, but we also have fun. Even though we're a remote company, our finance team makes a point of getting together in person once a week, just because we enjoy each other's company.

So that's my story – from computer science student to finance manager at one of the coolest tech companies around. If you're looking for a place where you can grow, be challenged and make a real impact, well, you might just find your home here at Sorted.
